Housing Affordability

The Chamber recognizes the link between the housing affordability and the ability to attract and retain workers. Recent growth pressures have strained Calgary's residential real estate market. Between 2005 and 2006 the median price of housing increased 41 per cent, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by a relatively stable rate of 4.6 per cent. Median household incomes have not kept up with housing price appreciation, growing five per cent.

Calgary now has the second highest average housing price in Canada behind Vancouver, and rents for 2-bedroom apartments are now the highest in country.
